    I have the Ryobi planer and it works pretty well. I learned a lesson this past week though. For large projects, check and see if the hardwood dealers in your area will surface plane for you. I am finishing up a fairly big workbench with the top made out of hard maple. For about $.15 a foot, they have the capability of running it through a five foot wide machine much faster and more accurately that I could have using my small bench planer. After I did my glue ups, I had two tops that weighed about 40#'s apiece. They made quick work out of getting it planed properly. IMHO, it was worth the extra expense.
